El rey Basilio manda aislar a su hijo Segismundo en una torre porque el horóscopo ha vaticinado que va a ser un rey cruel. Pasados los años, Basilio quiere darle una oportunidad a su hijo y ordena que lo lleven narcotizado al palacio. Cuando despierta, Segismundo mata a un criado y hace otras locuras que motivan que Basilio vuelva a ordenar su encierro. Pero el pueblo, que se ha enterado de que el rey tiene un heredero legítimo toma partido por Segismundo y se rebela. Segismundo toma el frente de sus partidarios y vence a su padre. Luego lo perdena, demostrando que sabe ser una persona generosa y amable.
