China ends one-child policy

A month ago, last October, the Chinese government announced the end of the one-child policy allowing couples to have two children. In 1979, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping imposed that policy in order to ensure that “the fruits of economic growth are not devoured by population growth.”

Couples couldn’t have more than one child and huge fines (159000 yuans, 23433 euros) and forced abortions were the usual punishments for the parents who had more than one child. One of the major reasons is the growing ageing population could jeopardize the sustainability of the government expenses.
